A man in Victoria, Canada, has successfully appealed a lifetime ban from the Fairmont Empress Hotel, issued in 2001 after a flock of seagulls trashed his room.

Yes, that's an actual flock of seagulls, not the rock band Flock of Seagulls, even though rock bands are known for trashing hotel rooms on a much more regular basis than birds.

The story goes thus: Back in 2001, Nova Scotian resident Nick Burchill was staying at the Fairmont Empress, and had brought with him a suitcase full of pepperoni to send to some friends in the navy. To keep the pepperoni cool, he had placed the suitcase near the window, where the smell attracted a bunch of the food-grubbing sea birds. The birds entered through the small window, where they promptly went to town on the preserved meats and got too confused to exit through the window again, so instead flapped around the room and broke stuff and, er, excreted on everything.

The unfortunate Mr. Burchill was given a lifetime ban from the hotel for this incident. Last week, he wrote a heartfelt letter of apology to the hotel, taking full responsibility for his youthful poor decision-making and asking the hotel to reconsider the ban.

The hotel at first thought the letter was an April Fool's Day joke, but upon confirming that it really did happen, they agreed to Mr. Burchill's request, and let him know that the hotel has air conditioning now.
