Woori Bank-KB at the end of the year

The women's professional basketball team, which played one-third of the entire schedule, is fiercely competing for the lead with Woori Bank's Woori WON and KB Stars, who were considered "two rivers" even before the season opened, recording a winning rate of more than 90%. Woori Bank and KB are showing off their power to be one step ahead of the other four clubs, as they have widened the gap with the third place by more than four games with less than half of the season. Unless there is a big time, either Woori Bank or KB is very likely to win the regular league.

Excluding Woori Bank and KB, Hana Q's recent upturn is noteworthy. Hana Q's ranking at the bottom for the last two consecutive seasons started with four consecutive losses this season, but since then, it has risen sharply by posting five wins and two losses in seven games to rank third. Veteran Kim Jong-un's leadership, who returned to his former club ahead of this season, is giving positive effects to teammates who were in a sense of defeat, creating good synergy for the entire team.

While some teams have performed better than expected, such as Hana One Q, others have been in a slump unexpectedly. A good example is BNK Som, which had a showdown with Woori Bank in the championship game last season. BNK, which advanced to the championship game for the first time since its foundation last season, was hoping for a championship challenge this season. However, BNK has disappointing performance of three wins and eight losses in 11 games since the opening of the season, including its recent four-game losing streak, ranking fifth among the six WKBL teams.

The youngest member who made it to the championship after 4 seasons

BNK, founded in 2019 by acquiring KDB Life Insurance Winners, which declared abandonment of the basketball team, has set up a coaching staff with female leaders, including coach Yoo Young-joo, Yang Ji-hee and coach Choi Yoon-ah. However, there was a bad news in the process of acquiring the club, when veteran forward Cho Eun-joo retired and Han Chae-jin moved to Shinhan Bank's S-Bird through sign-and-trade. Although the composition of the team has become younger like a new club, basketball fans cited the lack of veteran players who can be a focal point as BNK's anxiety factor.

And basketball fans' concerns were right. BNK, ranked fifth among the six clubs that first participated in the league in the 2019-2020 season, ranked at the bottom with 5 wins and 25 losses in the 2020-2021 season, when the foreign player system disappeared. Far from growing as a new club, it recorded a regressive performance compared to its first season. In the end, BNK's first head coach, Yoo Young-joo, stepped down after two seasons, and Park Jung-eun, the franchise star of the Samsung Life Bloomings, took over as the second manager.

The big difference between BNK and Park Jung-eun's appointment is that they realized the need for investment. BNK recruited Kang Ah-jung, a former national team shooter, from the FA market in April 2021, and a month later, it brought in Kim Han-byul, MVP of the 2020-2021 season championship, through a triangular trade with Samsung Life Insurance and Hana One Q. However, the newly recruited Kang Ah-jung and Kim Han-byul failed to meet expectations, scoring only a single-digit point side by side due to injuries in their first season of transfer.

However, BNK took the playoff stage for the first time since its foundation, ranking fourth in the regular league with 12 wins and 18 losses in the 2021-2022 season, when it recruited two veteran players. In the playoffs, they met KB, the winner of the regular league and lost six games against the regular league, and were eliminated after losing two consecutive games, but they did well even in difficult conditions, such as having an extended game in the second round. (KB, which beat BNK in the playoffs, easily beat Woori Bank with three wins and no losses in the championship game and won the unified championship).

BNK strengthened its power by recruiting Han Um-ji in the FA market, although there was a bad news that Kang Ah-jung retired after the 2021-2022 season. BNK, which ranked second in the regular league with 17 wins and 13 losses last season, beat Samsung Life Insurance, where Lee Ju-yeon, Kiana Smith and Yoon Ye-bin were injured, with two wins and no losses in the playoffs to advance to its first championship match. Although it failed to lift the trophy after losing to Woori Bank, it was a valuable runner-up in just four seasons by acquiring the weakest team.

BNK can live only when the silent outskirts live

Of course, BNK's runner-up finish last season was significantly influenced by the absence of Park Ji-soo, a key player in KB, the winner of the 2021-2022 season. Therefore, in order for BNK to clearly establish itself as an emerging strong player in the WKBL, Park Ji-soo should also perform well this season when he plays full time after his return. BNK has not neglected to prepare for the future by remaining FA Kim Han-byeol during the off-season and giving up Kim Si-on through a trade with Hana One Q and receiving two first-round picks.

Even when BNK had two wins and one loss in three games after the opening of the season, BNK's start was not so bad. However, BNK lost three consecutive games starting with the match against Samsung Life Insurance on November 16, and after escaping consecutive losses, it fell back into the swamp of four consecutive losses, falling to the fifth place with three wins and eight losses. Although it has only passed the first third point of the season, it is very difficult for BNK to chase the lead considering its "two-river" power, as it is still seven games away from the first-runner Woori Bank and 6.5 games against the second-ranked KB.

BNK's individual performance is by no means bad, with Jinan ranking fourth (17.00 points), second in rebound (10.36 points), first in two-point success rate (55.6 percent), An Hye-ji first in assist rate (6.82 points), Lee So-hee seventh in score (15.36 points) and first in free throws (87.1 percent). However, Jinan's teamwork in defense has been deteriorating enough to yield an average of 71.5 points per game, and both 3-point shots (5.0 points) and 3-point success rate (25.5 percent) per game remain at the bottom of the league. The team is almost three points shorter than Woori Bank (7.9).

Point guard Ahn Hye-ji, who showed a big weakness in outside shots with a success rate of 17.9% last season, did not improve significantly this season with a success rate of 18.4%. Above all, because of her lack of confidence in outside shots, she cannot throw shots with confidence even if her opponent defends one step away. Lee So-hee, the queen of three-point shooting last season, also saw her success rate drop from 37.6% to 29.3%.
