Seoul-Pohang first 'Kim Ki-dong Derby' in K League 1

Leading Pohang Steelers (13 points) and sixth-place FC Seoul (9 points) will meet in the seventh round of Hana Bank's K League 1 2024 at 2 p.m. on the 13th at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Seoul coach Kim Ki-dong is definitely the one who attracts the most attention for the match between the two teams.

Coach Kim Ki-dong, who has led the Pohang Steelers since 2019, surprised fans when he took the helm of Seoul in December last year.

Kim, who joined Pohang as a trainee in 1991, couldn't play and moved to the national team (currently Jeju) in 1993 before returning to Pohang in 2003, and picked up various trophies from the K League runner-up in 2004, the A3 Championship in 2005, the K League in 2007, the FA Cup (Korea Football Association Cup, the current Korea Cup), the Peace Cup Korea in 2009, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League in 2009.

Kim, who retired from active duty at the end of 2011 and turned into a leader, took the helm of Pohang in 2019 and led his team to the lead in the K League 1 and earned the nickname "Motor Magic" by leading the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League runner-up in 2021 and the FA Cup in 2023.

Coach Kim, who chose a "surprise transfer" to Seoul in December last year, lost the opening game this season, but has been undefeated in five consecutive games since then, focusing on strengthening his solidity.

In particular, Seoul has only four runs, including a "clean sheet" in three games while playing six games this season, and is recording a "minimal run" along with leading Pohang.

For Seoul, the victory against Pohang is important for its early move in the season.

Seoul, which won a landslide 5-1 victory against Gimcheon Sangmu on the 3rd, drew 0-0 against Daegu FC in the 6th round on the 7th, leaving it regretful.

In the last five games, there have been many draws despite being unbeaten, so we have to lay the groundwork for a rebound by winning the "difficult enemy" against Pohang this weekend.

Jesse Lingard, considered one of the best foreign players in K League 1 history, is expected to be able to return from a knee injury and return from the match against Pohang, which is expected to contribute to the team's ability to win six consecutive games.

In contrast, Pohang's goal is to maintain its lead through victory.

Pohang has also been undefeated in five consecutive games (4 wins and 1 draw), so its goal is to win two consecutive games along with six consecutive undefeated games.

This game is called "Kim Ki-dong Derby," but it can also be called "Park Tae-ha Derby."

Coach Park Tae-ha, who took the helm on behalf of head coach Kim Ki-dong, who left Pohang in December last year, is a "Pohang One Clubman."

He played in 263 games (46 goals and 37 assists) in Pohang between 1991 and 2001.

However, Park has an inseparable relationship with Seoul.

Coach Park joined forces with Choi Yong-soo, who served as Seoul's head coach in 2012 and led the team to win the K-League that year.

Coach Park, who took charge of Pohang in December last year, started bitterly with the loss of the opening game this season, but has been unbeaten in the last five consecutive games, combining three consecutive wins in the second and fourth rounds.

Pohang also needs to beat Seoul in the 7th round to keep its lead, as it is only 1 point difference from second-place Gimcheon (12 points).

Meanwhile, a showdown between Jeonbuk Hyundai, which is in a hurry to win, and Gwangju FC, which has to prevent five consecutive losses, is also of interest in the seventh round.

Jeonbuk (3 draws and 3 losses), a "traditional masterpiece" without a win in its opening six games, will meet Gwangju, which has recently lost four consecutive games, at Jeonju World Cup Stadium at 2 p.m. on the 13th.

The fall of Jeonbuk, a famous song, is unfortunate.

Jeonbuk, which has won the most K-League titles (9 times), has no victory in the opening six games and has lost two consecutive games recently.

However, the shock therapy of breaking up with coach Petrescu was useless.

Gwangju, which made a splash last season by ranking third with "Kim Jung-hyo Magic," is also in a bad situation.

Gwangju, which seemed to continue its sensation with two consecutive wins in the opening round, seems to be falling sharply with four consecutive losses recently.
