Cherokee Casino In Hara Starts Phase Reopening

Nearly 60 days after it closed to slow the spread of COVID-19, Hara's Cherokee Casino will begin its gradual reopening of Hara's Cherokee Casino Resort and Hara's Cherokee Valley River on Monday, May 18.

As Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and North Carolina begin to lay the framework for easing pandemic-related restrictions, casinos are looking forward to reopening operations, but extensive health and safety precautions are in place for the safety of their employees and guests. Areas where social distancing can be practiced, such as gaming venues, hotels and some restaurants, will be the first to open, with significant restrictions on occupancy. Areas where social distancing is not possible, such as spas, valets, poker, buffets and concerts, will remain closed until reopening is appropriate.

To enable social distancing, casinos can be accessed initially only with invitations, with small groups of customers receiving invitations via email as early as May 13. At this early stage, only invited guests can book a hotel or access their accommodations. The number of invitations can increase over time. During this period, EBCI members can also access both casinos.

Given this phased reopening, furloughed employees will begin to return to work as their respective work areas strengthen their operations. Before starting work, each employee will be required to complete a test, including a questionnaire and a temperature check, and wear a mask while on duty.

Reflecting on the closure, Brooks Robinson, senior vice president and general manager, said, "This is uncharted territory for the casino industry, but it won't be exactly the same as before we closed when we get back to work. We also understand that social distancing will be a part of our business and lives, and we look forward to welcoming our guests and team members back."
