The City Council may approve the Gateway's project

According to an unofficial survey conducted over the Internet, 69% of people living in London, Ontario are in favor of the extended gaming options of the existing Western Fair casino. A total of 727 people participated in the survey in March, and the results are not scientifically accurate, but they illustrate the general public opinion well. When it comes to supporting the planned expansion, people cited economic impact, new jobs, and more entertainment options.

Interestingly, this result contrasts with an old poll in which 70% of residents voted against casinos in London. But this was more than 20 years ago, during the 1997 civil election, when people were asked about their attitudes toward building gambling houses. According to the survey, only 31% of residents are opposed to the project proposed by the company that currently operates the Western Fair OLG slot, with more than half (62%) of those opposed seeing a negative impact on the community.

Casino expansion to add more slot machines and introduce table games has been discussed for about a year. Gateway Casino says the project may not be as attractive as other alternatives, as negotiations with the city take too much time and negotiations go too slow. Last week, Gateway Casino and Entertainment spokesman Rob Mitchell said the company offered "voluntary retirement incentives" to all 250 employees to force him to announce his dismissal in the Western Fair GOL slot, which was suspended next month.

Will the City Council of London give a green light to the expansion?
Gateway Casino and Entertainment received approval last year from the Ontario Lottery and Game Company (OLG) as the service operator for the North and Southwest game bundles. In May, it effectively took over the day-to-day operation of the Western Fair OLG slot. The 20-year contract includes casino extensions that can be made on the Western Fair site or elsewhere. The company is currently trying to secure a site for an initial $140 million investment plan.

According to the proposal, the company will add hotels and restaurants, and the new casino will have 1,500 slot machines and about 50 game tables for visitors to play poker, blackjack and roulette. Currently, there are just over 730 machines in the OLG slot store in the Western Fair area.

At a City Hall public meeting scheduled for Monday, the Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee will review all existing data on the project, including the results of its online survey. City officials are advising lawmakers to approve the expansion because London is already home to the OLG slot. Parliament is expected to vote, so a decision on enlargement will be made soon.
