Coach Nunu Espiritu Santo reported his first win since his return.

Nottingham Forest defeated Newcastle United 3-1 in the 19th round of the 2023-24 Premier League held at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England, at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. With the victory, Nottingham rose to 16th place in the league with four wins, five draws and 10 losses (17 points). Newcastle will remain seventh in the league with nine wins, two draws and eight losses (29 points).

Nottingham launched a 4-2-3-1 formation. Chris Wood, Callum Huderson-Odoi, Morgan Gibbs-White, Antony Elanga, Ibrahim Sangare, Danilu, Ola Aina, Murillo, Moussa Niakate, Gonzalo Montiel and Matt Turner started.

Newcastle brought up a 4-3-3 formation. Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Miguel Almiron, Sean Long staff, Bruno Guimarães, Luis Miley, Dan Byrne, Sven Boatman, Fabien Shea, Kieran Trippier and Martin Dubravka stepped up.


Director Nunu Espirito Santo returns to PL after 2 years

Nunu started his leadership career in 2010. Nunu took the helm of Wolverhampton in 2017 after Malaga started as coach, Valencia and Porto. He also had a successful run at Wolverhampton. He promoted teams from the second division to the PL, and was recognized for their leadership by producing mid-ranking performances every season. He joined Tottenham Hotspur through such performances.

However, the team showed disappointment at Tottenham. It was far from Tottenham's ideal dream of advancing to the UEFA Champions League by garnering five wins and five losses in 10 matches. Consequently, Chairman Daniel Levy replaced Nunu after just 10 matches and appointed Antonio Conte as new coach.

Afterwards, he continued his career as a wild man and took the helm of Saudi Arabia's Al Itihad in July last year. He won the Saudi Professional League and the Saudi Super Cup to secure two gold medals. However, he ranked sixth in this season's league and was eventually replaced.

He immediately returned to the PL. He was appointed as the new manager of Nottingham, which replaced Stephen Cooper on the 19th. Nottingham officially announced on the 20th, "The appointment of Nunu has been confirmed. He will lead the team for the first time against Bournemouth this coming weekend."

He made his first attempt. Nunu led Nottingham to a showdown with Bournemouth on the 24th, but Dominic Solanke's hat-trick brought him to his knees 2-3. However, he is set to report his first comeback win in a two-day match.

Nottingham launched a counterattack. He went from the gate through a long throw-in in the 30th minute of the first half and made a header, but it slightly missed the goal. Nottingham hit the ground. Elanga caught the ball 33 minutes after the first half and ran. There was Wood, who was located at the no-mark chance right next to him, but Elanga chose to shoot, and the goalkeeper was blocked.

Nottingham balanced the score. In the extra time of the first half, Nottingham immediately launched a counterattack after blocking Newcastle's attack. Gibbs-White grabbed the ball at the half line and moved forward, sending the ball to the side. Elanga, who caught it, sent a pass, and Wood lightly pushed it in at the door to score the equalizer.

There was an amazing save. Isaac tried to score with a free header at the gate in the extra time of the second half, but Turner blocked it. The second ball also managed to save and did not give up a point. Odoi's counterattack attack that followed headed straight to the goalkeeper with a weak shot. In the end, the first half ended 1-1.

[Second half] Wood hat trick explodes!... Nunu's first win under coach

Nottingham turned the game around. In the eighth minute of the second half, Nottingham launched a quick counterattack. Elanga drove the ball forward from his camp to the half-line, sending a pass to Wood in front. Wood dribbled away with Burn in front of him, then scored a come-from-behind goal by lightly finishing one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Newcastle immediately picked up a replacement card. At the 10th minute of the second half, Almiron and Byrne were excluded, and Callum Wilson and Tino Livramento were added. Wood displayed his firepower. At the 15th minute of the second half, Wood caught Murillo's left-footed long pass from the back, and immediately had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper. Wood calmly beat the goalkeeper, and scored a goal toward the empty goal to complete the hat trick. The hat trick on the day was Wood's second hat trick in his PL career.

Newcastle struggled. In the 22nd minute of the second half, Isaac moved from the side to the center at high speed and made a shot, but the defense saved it. In the 28th minute of the second half, Isaac blocked his shot and did not give up a point. Both teams sought to change the mood by replacing the two teams. In the 34th minute of the second half, Nottingham left out Huderson-Odoi and added Nicholas Dominguez. Newcastle replaced only the boat with Lewis Hall.

Six minutes of extra time was given in the second half. However, neither team scored an extra point, ending the game with Nottingham winning 3-1.
