"Dreaming of becoming a leader like a friend!"

In November last year, the news of KIA Tigers pitcher Ko Young-chang's retirement was reported.

Ko Young-chang, who wore the Tigers' uniform for 11 years and played in 156 games, was 2-7 with a 5.14 18 hold and two saves.

It's not a brilliant career, but in 2019, he played as the team's winning team and clearly imprinted his name in the heads of KIA fans.

KBC reporters met and talked with coach Ko Young-chang, who became a leader at his alma mater Gwangju Jinheung High School after retirement.

Coach Ko Young-chang, who said about how he became a coach, said, "I also met a good leader and threw it as a must-win group for a team called KIA Tigers, and I wanted to give young juniors such a good experience because I threw it as a chase group."

"I want to be a leader like a friend, but I'm not sure whether it's the right answer or not yet. I will study more, watch more, and feel more and try to become a leader like a friend," he said, expressing his ambition in the future.

The following is an interview with pitching coach Ko Young-chang of Jinheung High School.

- How you've been.

"Hello, I'm Ko Young-chang, a former KIA Tigers pitcher and current pitching coach at Jinheung High School. I retired last year and have been training with my players as a pitching coach since January this year."

- How I felt when I retired.

"I wanted to play longer, but there were a lot of good juniors, and I didn't think a better picture would come out because I said I would do it for another year or another year. I wanted my juniors to receive such an opportunity, so I decided to stop playing baseball rather than retirement."

- What made you walk the path of a leader.

"I met a good leader and I've been on the first team stage in the KIA Tigers, I've thrown a must-win group, and I've thrown a chase group, so I wanted to give young juniors a good experience like this, so I thought I'd really like to be a leader."

- If you're a good leader, do you happen to be a coach Seo Jae-eung?

"Yes, that's right. Coach Seo Jae-eung was a coach who played with me, so he recognized me a little better and grasped what was good about me and what was bad about me. Until I met Coach Seo Jae-eung, I was a player in the second division every year, and I was playing baseball with such pressure that I didn't know when I would get cut every time I got older. I wasn't a fire bowler, but I was just that kind of player when I threw in the late 140km/h. Coach Seo Jae-eung told me to try a two-seam feature, so I was influenced by that and I worked hard to cultivate my determination, and I think I got a good result."

- What's your style of teaching.

"When I first came, I thought I would like to be a coach who is like a friend and communicate well. After talking with the players and getting to know each other, I thought I should set a line and do it. At first, I thought it would be nice to have a good atmosphere like a friend, but now they are so young and they are still a little inexperienced in manners, so I am trying to give them a lot of guidance."

- If you have a goal for this year's promotion center.

"I'm not that strong because a lot of third-year fielders transferred to other teams and quit baseball. But I don't think there's anyone who can't beat them because they're all united. Of course, our goal is to win, but if we win each game, I think we can win one day."

- What kind of leader do you want to be.

"I want to be a leader like a friend, but I'm not sure if it's the right answer yet. So far, I want to walk that path, but I'll study more, watch more, feel more, and try to become a leader like a friend."
