Woo Sang-hyuk wins bronze medal at World Indoor Championships

Woo Sang-hyuk won a bronze medal by clearing 2m 28 in the men's high jump final at the 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships held at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland on the 3rd local time.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who won the 2022 Belgrade competition by over 2m34, failed to achieve his second consecutive victory in the competition, but climbed to the podium for the second consecutive time.

Woo Sang-hyuk received $10,000 (approximately 13 million won) in bronze medal prize money from the organizers of the World Indoor Championships, and also received 10 million won in performance improvement support provided by the Korea Association of Athletics Federations.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who met with reporters after entering the arrival hall at Incheon International Airport, said, "It's unfortunate that I didn't win, but I want to give meaning to being on the podium. I trained really well in the winter systematically, but my condition wasn't good on the day of the World Indoor Championships. “I feel like I received my last homework,” he said.

Sanghyuk Woo participated in four competitions in this year’s indoor season.

He took second place with 2m 33 at the Justopece Competition in the Czech Republic on February 11, and reached the top at the Banska Bystrica Competition in Slovakia (2m 32) on February 14 and the Nehvizdi Competition in the Czech Republic on the 21st (2m 30).

At the World Indoor Championships, the last competition of the indoor season, he placed third.

Now Woo Sang-hyuk goes outdoors and prepares for the Paris Olympics.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who has already secured the right to participate in the Paris Olympics, will appear on the Olympic stage for the third time, following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games (2m26, failed to advance to the finals) and the 2021 Tokyo Games (2m35, 4th place).

Woo Sang-hyuk said, "Even at the Paris Olympics, I may not be in good condition on the day of the competition. Even if I am not in good condition, I have to produce a record to win a medal. There is enough time to prepare for the Paris Olympics. My goal at the Paris Olympics is to win."

Since liberation, there have been only two Olympic medalists produced by Korean track and field: Hwang Young-jo in Barcelona in 1992 (gold medal) and Lee Bong-ju in Atlanta in 1996 (silver medal).Both medals came in the marathon, a road event.

In track & field, there has yet to be a Korean Olympic medalist.

Woo Sang-hyuk, who has already set several first records in Korean track and field, including winning the World Indoor Championships, second place in the Outdoor World Championships (2022), and winning the Diamond League Final (2023), is building momentum for another thrilling leap.
