"I love it. One more foreign pitcher is coming," Hanwha Eagles coach Choi Won-ho said when they met in January.

Korean Monster Ryu Hyun-jin joined Hanwha. Hanwha said on the 22nd that it signed an eight-year contract with Ryu Hyun-jin for a total of 17 billion won (including opt-out and not disclosed under the agreement of the two sides).

Ryu immediately joined Hanwha's second spring camp in Okinawa, Japan, on Tuesday and played bullpen pitching. Rumors have it that Ryu's physical condition and ball power were very good.

For Hanwha, Ryu has literally joined the team. In 2006, he was called upon by the Hanwha Eagles as the second overall player in the second round, and until 2012, he had 98 wins, 52 losses, one save, 1,238 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.80, in 190 games (1,269 innings) and reigned as the ace pitcher of the Korean baseball.

Ryu continued his presence in the Major League Baseball (MLB). After joining hands with the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2013 season, he continued his career in the big league through the 2023 season while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2019, he garnered 14 wins and 163 strikeouts along with a 2.32 ERA, becoming the first Asian pitcher to win the title of ERA, and ranking second in the National League Cy Young Award. His career record in the Major League is 78 wins, 48 losses and one save with a 3.27 ERA in 186 games (1,055.1 innings).

Prior to Ryu Hyun-jin's return, Hanwha set its goal for the first time in six years since the 2018 season. Although it remained at the bottom for three years from 2020 to 2022, it took a leap to ninth place with 58 wins, six draws, and 80 losses last year, and Moon Dong-ju and Noh Si-hwan were reborn as national ace and center hitters, respectively. In addition, prospects Kim Seo-hyun and Hwang Joon-seo are preparing to burst their potential, and experienced veterans Ahn Chi-hong, Kim Kang-min and Lee Jae-won were also embraced during the off-season.

Against this backdrop, Ryu's joining is expected to give wings to Hanwha. As mentioned earlier, Ryu is a pitcher who will remain in the history of Korean baseball and remains competitive. Although he was unable to continue his career in the big leagues, it was largely due to the cold-free market.

Ryu is also a veteran player who can serve as a role model for younger players. Critics have pointed out that Hanwha, which has young players, lacks veteran players. However, Ryu's recruitment instantly offset that.


Choi Won-ho, whom Ryu Hyun-jin met in January when his joining was undecided, said with a big smile, "It would be great if Ryu Hyun-jin comes. A top foreign pitcher is coming." And this has come true. Naturally, some say that the team should raise its goal for this season, not just advance to the postseason.

In response, Ryu said he would not hurry up and expressed confidence. "I think we should do the postseason (for now)," he told reporters before departing on Sunday. "I think that's the first time. A lot of veteran players with veteran's skills have been recruited as well. Including veteran players and young players, the team seems to have harmonized well. Young players also showed good performance last year. I think we can start the season with more confidence this year."

"(My goal for the eight-year contract period) is to win the Korean Series. I don't think I have anything else other than that," he said. "I'm back in Hanwha after 12 years. I'll do my best to help Hanwha advance to the postseason."
