Casino workers urged to donate April Food Day Drive

Las Vegas hotel and casino employees put down their stunts and open up for the fifth April Food Day food drive.

The drive will be held at several hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, and will benefit the homeless and working poor in the Las Vegas community through Catholic Charities in Southern Nevada.

For a week, employees will be encouraged to drop off non-excessive food in designated boxes at hotels or casinos, according to Sharon Mann, community relations manager for Southern Nevada Catholic Charities.

The designated boxes are often seen in places where employees keep their watches, she said.

Local hotels and casinos participating in this year's April Food Day drive include Bali, Caesars Palace, Eldorado Casino, Flamingo, Haras, Jokers Wild Casino, Las Vegas Hilton, New York-New York, and Paris Las Vegas.

According to Mann, 15,000 pounds of food was collected through the drive last year. "That's enough to last a few months," she said.

Mann said the annual food drive is the perfect opportunity to start stocking on shelves for spring.

"What happens is we collected a lot of food over the Christmas holiday and as the months that followed, we started to run out," she said. "We needed something to refill our pantries for the spring, so we thought of April's Food Day."

Catholic charities have asked to participate in local hotels and casinos, she said.
