Racetracks in Alberta have surged in popularity over the past few weeks, regardless of the dynamically changing situation at the state and national level. The Century Mile Racetrack and Casino in Edmonton said it recently raised about C$800,000 a day through a Thoroughbred Racing Live event on the grounds of the racetrack.

The past two months have been more than turbulent for both Canada's gambling and horse racing industries, as they have witnessed a temporary suspension of daily operations not only at racetracks but also at casino branch premises. Century Mile Racetrack was one of the points where it had to suspend daily operations and postpone the 2020 live season.

Despite uncertainty, horse racing resumed some daily events of this year's conference on June 21, preparing for a total of 40 days of live events during the summer and fall months of 2020. Century Mile Racetrack is the only one mile long thoroughbred racetrack west of woodbine, making it a somewhat special place for equestrian and horse racing fans in Alberta.

Expectations for this live season weren't high, but as recently confirmed, it's vastly exceeded. Edmonton Racing Hotspot announced that daily events averaged over CA$800,000 per day. Individuals have been interested in participating in exciting live events there over the past few months, and this market has seen a shocking year-on-year increase.

In the spring of 2019, you can recall that the official opening of this new racetrack and the first racing season left a lot of regrets. It averaged C$162,000 per day during those weeks of live obedience racing on the site. Compared to this year's performance, it jumped 400% in 2020. One of the highlights of this year's competition was none other than the Canadian Derby.

It was also much more successful than the 2019 edition because individuals were more interested in following and betting. Harness Racing also had significant success during its 2020 live racing schedule, averaging C$175,000 per day. This is a 75% jump compared to last year's performance.

Kent Burlick, chief executive of Equestrian Alberta, said improvements in both services year-on-year exceeded the expectations of equestrian people in Alberta. Just a few months ago, they didn't even know if horse racing would be allowed in this state. The unprecedented situation also called for the introduction of a range of health and safety measures and protocols to further impact the training process and the ultimate live race.

The original plan for the Edmonton Racing Hotspot was to bring 227 racing days, but the raceway missed March, April and May this year, so it only introduced 140 days. Harness Racing saw it bring more races in February on Nov. 15.
