Game 2 win big boost for San Beda

THE San Beda Red Lions had not beaten the Mapua Cardinals in the NCAA Season 99 men's basketball elimination round, losing to the latter twice.

The third seed San Beda also fell prey to the top seed Mapua in Game One of the Finals, 63-68, last Wednesday, December 6, for a total of a 0-3 record.

This is why the Red Lions' Game Two win over the Cardinals is a big psychological boost for his team, according to coach Yuri Escueta.

Not only did they level the best-of-3 series at 1-1 with the 71-65 triumph, they also gained that belief and proved to themselves that they can beat the Cardinals after all.

Leading the way for the Red Lions in Game Two that drew a massive crowd of 22,465 fans was Jacob Cortez who fired 21 points on 5-of-12 shooting and logged nine rebounds, and three assists, recovering from a subpar performance where he notched 12 points on a dismal 3-of-17 shooting clip.

Escueta said that the 5-foot-10 Cortez, son of La Salle legend Mike, is simply special.

"After a bad game (Game One) like that right? You know when he's special, right? To have made a comeback after that game is a struggle. Could have been better if he made free throws but that kid is special and he doesn't want to lose. He told me that before the ballgame, first win against Mapua."

Escueta also lauded the fighting spirit of his other players, specifically Peter Alfaro, James Payosing and Yukien Andrada.

"They all have it (never give up mentality). Peter, James Payosing and Yuki. I saw it in their eyes that they won't lose today. The way they tap me today is different, the way they look is different. Their taps were a bit painful. I felt it."
