Alturas Casino will celebrate its third anniversary from Sept. 13-15.
"Everyone was invited to help them celebrate in a big way," said Elaine Schreiner, a casino marketing manager. "We started out as the smallest casino, with only 10 employees and 20 bingo machines."
In May 2000, a ballot measure was passed in California to allow Nevada-style games. The casino then changed its machines. The resulting growth means that the casino now has nearly 100 machines, around 40 employees, and five days of live bingo a week. A small snack/smoke shop has also been added.
"The casino is now one of the largest private employers in the Alturas area," said Schreiner. "As our business continues to grow, new employees have been added. The casino has strived to provide the most popular and up-to-date gadgets, including the only Black Jack/Ace progressive game console in California.
"Our goal is to continue building bigger facilities and growing up to have the friendliest casino in the state," she said.
Schreiner said many employees had little or no casino experience when they joined the team.
"They are now a trained team with a lot of experience working together," Schreiner said. "They take pride in our contributions, donating to service organizations every month and contributing to the community through scholarships. The casino has a significant workforce, attracting tourists to the area and helping the community.
The weekend celebration party will include a painting. Prizes include DVD, television, ballooning, dinner at an Alturas-area restaurant, and two Reno trips.
Live bingo is held on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Free slot tournaments are available throughout the weekend.
Live music will be performed by the Rogue Radio Band from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Sept. 14. Country Jam will be played from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The Sept. 7 special lottery is for free accommodation at Alturas' Best Western Trailside Inn on Saturday, Sept. 14. To participate in the special lottery, send a postcard with your name, address, and phone number to the Alturas Casino (Alturas Casino, P.O. Box 910, Alturas, CA 96101), by Sept. 6. Admission must live within 50 miles of Alturas.
The casino is located on the southern end of the town in Alturas Rancheria. Turn left at Alturas along Highway 395 and there is a sign about eight-tenths of a mile (about 1.6 km) away at the entrance between the park and the museum. People must be 18 years old to enter the casino.
