Table Tennis Mixed World Cup runners-up

Shin Yu-bin and Jeon Ji-hee participate in the King of Kings Tournament

Finished in second place after losing to China in the mixed team event

Korean table tennis took second place in the ‘2023 ITTF Mixed Team World Cup’. Shin Yu-bin (Korean Air) and Jeon Ji-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) will compete in the Women's Singles King of Kings Tournament.

The Korean table tennis team lost with a game score of 1-8 in the match against China held at the Sichuan Gymnasium in Chengdu, China on the 10th (Korean time).

Korea ranked second with 6 wins and 1 loss, following China, which won all 7 matches.

China, which boasts the world's strongest military power, pushed Korea. In the first match, mixed doubles Wang Chu-qin and Sun Ying-sha and in the second match women's singles Wang Man-yu won against Ahn Jae-hyun, Shin Yu-bin and Kim Na-young without giving up a single game.

Korea, whose mood had calmed down after being pushed down by a score of 0-6 in the early game, scored a point in the 3-match men's singles match. Lee Sang-soo, the most senior player against Pan Zhendong, won the second game after a deuce. By conceding the third game, China's 8-1 victory was confirmed.

The female players suffered from bad news just before the final match against China. Women's team pillar Jeon Ji-hee suffered from stomach cramps, and Shin Yu-bin, who suffered from pain in her shoulders and back, was forced to participate.

Although they lost to China in the final match, Korea performed well in this tournament. Powerful countries such as Taiwan, France, Slovakia, Sweden, Germany, and Japan were defeated one after another.

This competition, held from the 4th to the 10th, is a newly launched competition by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), which promises to advocate gender equality and diversity and emphasize the spirit of collaboration and teamwork in sports. Based on ITTF team ranking, 18 countries were invited.

In Korea, men Lee Sang-soo (33, Samsung Life Insurance), Jang Woo-jin (28), Lim Jong-hoon (26, Korea Exchange), Ahn Jae-hyun (23, Korea Exchange), women Jeon Ji-hee (31, Mirae Asset Securities), Lee Si-on (27, Samsung Life Insurance), Shin Yu-bin (19, Korean Air) and Kim Na-young (18, POSCO International) participated. Joo Se-hyuk and Oh Kwang-heon, coaches of the men's and women's national teams, sat together on the bench.

The national team players who competed in the first mixed team World Cup cannot rest even afterward.

Shin Yu-bin and Jeon Ji-hee of the women's national team will move to Nagoya to participate in the 'World Table Tennis (WTT) Finals Women's Tournament' to be held in Japan starting on the 15th.

The remaining players will head to Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, the venue of the competition, as soon as they return to Korea for the 77th National Men's and Women's Table Tennis Championships, which are currently holding preliminary matches.
