‘Soto trade in a labyrinth’ NYY “I can’t give you King Soap”

Where will Juan Soto , whose transfer to the New York Yankees initially seemed virtually confirmed, go? The New York Yankees expressed difficulty with the San Diego Padres' request.

The New York Post reported on the 4th (Korean time) that the New York Yankees will keep Michael King and Drew Thorpe, who were named as compensation for the Soto trade.

The official Major League Baseball website, reported on the 2nd that San Diego requested 4 to 5 prospects along with King and Thorpe as conditions for a Soto trade.

The key here is King and Thorpe. If the New York Yankees decide to keep King, it may be difficult to bring in Soto. Because he is the player that San Diego wants the most.

King is a right-handed pitcher born in 1995 and has been in the Major League for five years. He pitched 104 innings in 49 games last season, pitching two-thirds of an inning, and had a 2.75 earned run average.

Also, Thorpe, a right-handed pitcher born in 2000, showed good performance with an ERA of 2.52 in 139 1/3 innings in the top single-A and double-A minor league leagues last season.

Soto is a player who will qualify as a free agent (FA) player after the 2024 season. You can't give him a free pass when you can't guarantee he'll be locked into a long-term contract.

While the New York Yankees faltered, the Toronto Blue Jays quickly emerged as a candidate to recruit Soto. Toronto also emerged as a dark horse in recruiting Shohei Ohtani.

The only problem is the destination, and the Soto trade itself is known to have a close to 100% chance of happening. This is expected to make progress during the Winter Meetings.
