Technical support issues
Controversy has grown over Manchester United's new goalkeeper Andre Onana in the English Premier League (EPL).
Ahead of this season, Manchester United parted ways with David de Gea, Manchester United's leading goalkeeper. And then I recruited Onana from Inter Milan. However, the goalkeeper's position has worsened. De Gea was kicked out on the grounds that there were many mistakes, because Onana, who was brought in to prevent them, was making more mistakes.
The dominant analysis is that Onana played a big role in Manchester United's fall this season. Another reason why De Gea's return is gaining strength is Onana's sluggishness. It's Onana, which is hard to turn around.
Onana had another accident. The match against Galatasaray in Group A of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) was held on the 30th of last month. United took the lead, but Onana's error prevented them from keeping the lead. In particular, Onana had to bow down, conceding two goals from a free kick to Hakim Ziyech.
United ended up in a 3-3 draw and failed to escape last place in Group A. He is on the verge of being eliminated from the group stage.
When this absurd situation was created, Peter Schmeichel, who is called the "Greatest of all time (GOAT)," who is revered as the greatest goalkeeper in Manchester United's history, was furious.
Schmeichel played for Manchester United from 1991 to 1999, winning a total of 15 championships, including five EPL titles. The biggest achievement was also the first "treble" in England's history to win the UCL after the 1998-99 EPL and FA Cup.
Schmeichel slammed Onana on 'CBS Sports'. He said, "You know what? United's four-back played very well. I don't think they could have done better, they could have done more. "It was all Onana's fault that Manchester United gave up three goals," he said.
"Don't try to argue about this," he continued. Onana made a very expensive, expensive mistake. Whenever Onana made a mistake, it led to a run. This is the fact. The goalkeeper's mistake is making a goal. I'm playing at this level. We have to learn more," he said.
Amid the flood of criticism towards Onana, Manchester United manager Se Erik ten Hag has defended Onana. "I'm fine with Onana," he said. It is not about the individual. In soccer, individual mistakes can make a difference, and players can be held responsible for it. But you always have to think of it as a team," he said.
