The 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO Awards ceremony was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul at 2 p.m. on the 27th. The MVP and Rookie of the Year who drew the most attention are NC Dinos foreign pitcher Eric Peddy and Hanwha Eagles fireballer Moon Dong-ju.
Pedi, who was in the U.S. after the end of the season, stepped on Korean soil again through Incheon International Airport on the 26th to attend the awards ceremony. He won the MVP award on the 27th and will leave the country again on the 28th. Will he ever step on Korean soil again.
Pedi said, "I'm grateful to the KBO League. I was able to win the award because I came to a team called NC. "I didn't expect to make this ending, but I'm so honored and happy," he said, adding, "I attended with hope that I could get an MVP." I'm very happy to actually receive it," he said.
"If it wasn't for my teammates, I wouldn't have won the award," he continued. We want to say brother to the end. I am also grateful to coach Kang In-kwon, coaches, and staff, he said. "I want to give this honor to the city of Changwon." Many citizens have helped. "Wherever I go in the future, Changwon will be my second home," he said.
Will he ever go to Changwon again. Pedi has looked back since camp earlier this year. "I felt like a stranger for the first time while playing baseball," he said. It was a new environment. There was also a language barrier. So I tried a lot to make them like me. The players welcomed me from the first day. I'm happy to be like a brother in the end," he said repeatedly expressing his gratitude.
"I want to say thank you and love my brother and team members," Pedi said of the possibility of renewing his contract with NC, "I will talk to NC first and talk to other teams. No matter what choice you make, your family will come first. Of course, NC should also talk. I think NC is a very good team among many teams," he added.
Pedi, who became the best pitcher in the KBO League this year, has a chance to return to the Major League. Pedi, a former Washington prospect, made his big league debut in 2017. Since then, he played for six seasons until last year. Until last year, he was the fifth starting pitcher in Washington.
The U.S. expects Pedi to sign a relatively large contract. The U.S. "New York Post" said on the 10th (Korea Standard Time), "Peddy, who received an offer from just two teams last winter, became a coveted player in the FA market as he became the best pitcher in Korea. One of the teams that offered Peddy a contract was the New York Yankees, who immediately classified it as a power source.
On the 8th, "MLB Trade Rumors" also said, "Peddy was once a promising player who received a lot of attention, but he did not have much success in the big leagues. But I had a great season in Korea. It has become an interesting wild card in the FA market," he said.
Pedi first stepped on the Korean soil this season and achieved the triple crown (numbering multiple ERAs) with 20 wins, 6 losses, 2.00 ERA and 209 strikeouts. It was the fourth major event in history after Sun Dong-yeol, Ryu Hyun-jin, and Yoon Seok-min, and the seventh in history (the fourth inning in Sun Dong-yeol, Ryu Hyun-jin, and Yoon Seok-min once). It is the first time in 37 years that he has recorded 20 wins and 200 strikeouts at the same time since Sun Dong-yeol in 1986.
He played an all-time role. "It's been an incredible season," he said."In the middle of the season, I thought, 'Can I do it?'" In the end, he finished well after continuing to run. "I don't think there will be a greater season in baseball than this year in the future," he stressed.
He also said, "It was a great honor to play a role in the KBO league this season. I know the record for 20 wins and 200 strikeouts is also 37 years old. I think I was lucky in many ways. I am grateful to be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best players of all time. The trophies are to be displayed in the memorial hall at home. I will go into the room often and take time to look back on this year," he said.
He also received the new defense award for the first time this year. Pedi was the main character in the pitching category as the first winner. Pedi said, "I'm grateful and honored to be the first to receive the KBO Defensive Award. I will turn my gratitude to the fans," he said.
