Kansas Casino Regulator Asks For Pay Cut

This is probably the most unusual piece of gambling news you'll hear this year. But on January 16, five members of the Kansas State Racing Authority actually asked Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to cut her salary. Supervisors usually receive nearly $24,000 a year. Mike Deans, a spokesman for the commission, said the commissioners felt it appropriate to call for a pay cut given the state budget crisis and the fact that there were already planned staff layoffs.

The commission is supposed to receive compensation from fees from companies to be regulated, not tax revenue, but in 2008 an ambitious plan for seven state-owned gambling houses fell through. Currently, only one casino is under construction, and the Dodge City facility is scheduled to open later this year.
