Technical support issues
Although only one day has passed, the sudden dismissal of SSG Landers' coach Won-hyung Kim is shocking news.
It is unprecedented to dismiss a coach who achieved a combined championship in just one year. In 2010, the Samsung Lions unexpectedly dismissed former coach Sun Dong-yeol, who finished second in the Korean Series, at the end of the year. However, most of the replacements of coaches who lost in the postseason were naturally decided by the expiration of the contract period.
Looking at the 2010s, there was a surprising case when LG Twins coach Yeom Kyung-yeop, who was in charge of the Nexen Heroes in the 2016 season, announced a 'resignation' written on his cell phone in the interview room at Jamsil Stadium after losing in the semi-playoffs against LG at the time. At the time, coach Yeom Kyung-yeop had one year remaining on his contract with Nexen. I vividly remember seeing the reporter right in front of me.
Coach Won-hyung Kim said he would prepare well for the 2024 season after finishing the semi-playoffs against NC Dinos with three losses. He was preparing for the actual Kagoshima finishing training when he suddenly received notice of his dismissal. In the end, he was named on the Korean Series winning manager's cruel list.
However, I don’t think former director Kim Won-hyung needs to think too hastily. Looking back on history, the title of winning manager of the Korean Series is the best specification for a leader. Except for Lee Hee-soo, Trey Hillman, Kim Ki-tae, and former manager Lee Dong-wook, all Korean Series winning managers have taken the baton at least once in another team.
KT Wiz coach Lee Kang-cheol is currently at the helm and has even signed an extension contract. Coach Kim Ki-tae is not in the first team, but he is in charge of the team's second team. Former coach Hillman also returned to the United States for personal reasons immediately after winning the championship. In the end, with the exception of former coach Lee Hee-soo, it must be said that he received one more opportunity without exception.
Former coach Won-Hyung Kim has quite an impressive career as a leader, serving as a pitcher and head coach not only for SSG but also for the Lotte Giants and Doosan Bears. He is a leader whose performance and capabilities have been fully verified by SSG. There is a good chance that he will receive love calls from other teams in the future.
For similar reasons, attention is focused on the actions of former NC Dinos coach Lee Dong-wook, who is currently a hotshot. He is active, having recently received coaching training with the San Diego Padres. Attention is focused on whether he will be able to get re-employed, and if so, when and with which team.
However, what is also interesting is that other than former coach Kim Eung-ryong, no one changed teams and won the Korean Series. In this respect, it is a new challenge for coach Kim Tae-hyung, who took the helm of the Lotte Giants.
