Royal Antwerp lost 2-3 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the second Group H match of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League at Bosayelstadion in Antwerp, Belgium, on the 5th. Antwerp fell to the bottom of the group after losing two in a row.
The match between Shakhtar and Antwerp was tight. Antwerp took the lead. Antwerp took the lead in the third minute of the first half with the opening goal of flanker Arvnormuya. Antwerp widened its lead to two goals in the 33rd minute of the first half when wing forward Michel Ange Baliquisha scored an additional goal.
Shakhtar didn't give up easily either. Shakhtar scored a comeback goal by Danilo Sikan in the third minute of the second half, and Shakhtar balanced the game with Yaroslav Rakitsky's equalizer in the 26th minute of the second half. Shakhtar turned the game around in the 31st minute of the second half when Sikan scored multiple goals.
At the end of the game, Antwerp took a decisive chance with a penalty. The kicker was captain Alderweireld. If Alderweireld scored a penalty kick, the game was tied. Antwerp could get one point.

Alderweireld was a defender who played for Tottenham in the past. He played for Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Southampton before joining Tottenham in the summer of 2015. Son Heung-min joined Tottenham during the same period. Alderweireld is Son Heung-min's motivation to join the team.
Alderweireld led Tottenham's golden age under Mauricio Pochettino with Son Heung-min. If Son Heung-min was aiming to score from the front, Alderweireld kept a strong back. Tottenham scored the league's lowest number of runs in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons thanks to Alderweireld. In the 2018/19 season, he reached the Champions League final for the first time in the club's history.
Alderweireld, who played for Tottenham for six years, parted ways with Tottenham after the 2020/21 season. He joined Antwerp in Belgium in July 2022 after going through Al Duhail in Qatar. Back home, he scored a dramatic equalizer with a mid-range shot in second-half stoppage time in the Belgian League final last season. Antwerp won the league for the first time in 66 years thanks to Alderweireld's goal.
