Manchester City lost 0-1 against Newcastle in the third round of the 2023-24 English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England, on the 28th. In the eighth minute of the second half, Isaac scored the first goal. This eliminated Manchester City from the Cup. After winning six consecutive EPL games, his momentum was inevitably dampened.  

Prior to the match, Guardiola caused controversy for making remarks that ignored the Cup.

"We will not waste 1% of energy for the Carabao Cup," he stressed.

Guardiola then said, "Players who have played for Manchester City will not play against Newcastle. The Carabao Cup will be a great opportunity for players who have not played in the past.
