The Toronto Blue Jays, in the thick of the fall baseball race, earned a thrilling come-from-behind victory a day before Hyun-jin Ryu is scheduled to start.
The Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 13 extra innings on Sunday (Sept. 17) at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the final game of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
Toronto has won two straight after losing four straight. They remained in fourth place in the American League wild-card race.
Toronto can clinch the third spot if the third-place Seattle Mariners lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers later in the day.
Tickets to the MLB postseason are available to the third wild card.
The game was dramatic. Trailing 1-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Toronto rallied with a leadoff single to right by pinch-hitter Cavan Biggio.
A wild pitch put runners on second and third, and Dolton Bashaw hit a game-winning triple just over the center field fence to send the game into extra innings.
The extra innings were thrilling. Tied 2-2 in the top of the 12th inning, Toronto gave up a single up the middle to Pablo Reyes with the bases loaded to make it 3-2.
But in the bottom of the 12th, George Springer drew a walk to put runners on first and third, and then Beau Bisset hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
The game came down to offense in the bottom of the 13th inning, as Toronto held the defense scoreless in the top of the 13th before Whit Merrifield hit an infield single to end the game with runners on second and third.
Both teams used their bullpens on the day. Toronto used five relievers, including Jordan Hicks and Jordan Romano. Boston used seven bullpen arms.
After the hard-fought win, Toronto will host Boston at 2:37 p.m. on April 18 at the same location.
Toronto's starter is Hyun-jin Ryu, while Boston's is Nick Pivetta, who is 9-9 with a 4.56 ERA this season.
Ryu hasn't been bad since returning from injury in August, going 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA.
He has gone at least five innings in every start except for one against the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 8, when he was hit by a pitch and left early.
