The Short History of the British Lottery

On November 19, 1994, the National Lottery held its first lottery draw. Since then, various other people, including EuroMillions, have joined major Lotto games. But the concept of lottery is far from modern innovation.

After seeing locals play unregulated lottery, the government led by Queen Elizabeth I created the first official lottery in 1566. While lottery tickets are commonly used today to help fund various government and non-government projects and businesses, Queen Elizabeth I used the first lottery pot as a three-year interest-free loan. Although people were able to purchase official tickets in 1566, the draw did not actually take place until 1569. But the official lottery did not stop people from holding their own personal lottery tickets, opening the door to criminals who swindled the lottery and fled before the draw - leaving no doubt a trail of disappointed crooks.

In 1698, all unofficial British lottery tickets were outlawed and the British state lottery was born. The new law ruled out criminal activity, but tickets to the state lottery were expensive, meaning only wealthy people could buy them. To solve this problem, people could buy some of the tickets as small as one-sixteenth, so if their tickets won, they could take an equal share of the prize money.

In 1826, the British state lottery closed - leaving the British to look elsewhere for money if they wanted a chance to win in life. People turned to betting on sports games, and in the 20th century, soccer pools became more and more popular. In 1987, Barry Dinsdale received £1,910,972 and Roddy Woodcock received £2,072,220 in 1991. The popularity of the soccer field finally led to the birth of the national lottery in 1994.

Since the first national lottery draw in 1994, 3,000 lottery players have become millionaires, bringing in a total of 억8.5 billion. The game's popularity also helped raise £32 billion in ticket sales for charities and projects in the UK.
