Ostrich Racing

Ostrich Racing
Ostrich racing is a sport in which people race against each other on the back of an ostrich. They can also ride similar to horses with wagons, special saddles, reins and beats. This competition is harder to manage than words. The ostrich is a large flightless bird that is mostly native to Africa.

History
The history of ostrich racing dates back to 1890, when ostrich riding was a popular tourist attraction in Jacskonville, Florida. The inventor of the sport is unknown, but it is thought to have originated in Africa before it spread to the United States.

How it works
Ostrich racing is a sport in which riders compete with each other as they climb on the back of an ostrich. Sometimes a tram, saddle, or carriage is used to ride an ostrich. The rules are simple. Participants ride on the bird's back, grab the feathers, and ride across the track.

Why is ostrich racing unique?
People ride the ostrich themselves or with the help of a saddle and carriage, which can reach a speed of 70 km/h (43 mph), and it is not uncommon for an ostrich to fall during a race and continue running on its own.

Did you know
The ostrich is the fastest running bird in the world! Scientists saw the ostrich continue to run at speeds of 30-37 miles and gallop to 43 miles. A long, sturdy leg ostrich can cover more than 10 feet with one step.
