The Royal Game of Ur

The Royal Game of Ur
The speed and strategy game Royal Game of Ur is one of the oldest board games ever discovered. The template is based on a 4,600-year-old board from Ur city in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq).

History
The Royal Game of Ur was played in ancient Mesopotamia. The earliest game boards date back to around 2400 B.C., but the most famous, from which the modern name of the game originated, comes from a royal tomb in the ancient Sumerian city of Ur in modern Iraq.

The original name of the ancient game disappeared with the times, but it was called the royal game of ur in 1928 after British Archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley discovered five old playboards at the royal cemetery in the Sumerian city of ur.

Objectively
The purpose of the game is for the player to move all seven horses along the course (two suggested versions shown on the right) and off the board in front of the opponent.

Goal
Each player has half of the board. The purpose of the game is to move the horse onto the board, move it successfully to the other end of the board, and then pull it out.

How to play
It is generally agreed that the royal game of ur is a race game - the goal is to get all seven pieces around the board to the finish line first. Throw the dice to determine who plays first. If the highest score comes first and it's a draw, throw it again. Players take turns throwing three binary lots and moving one of their horses.

What words do you need to play Urwangsil?
Ur games are played using two sets of seven game pieces similar to those used in drawing or checker. One set is white with five black dots and the other set is black with five white dots.

The pattern of the game is similar to that of "Ur". At one end lies a 4 x 3 square block, extending from the center, with eight more squares. It's like the Egyptians moved two square blocks at each end from the edge to the middle row.

Did you know
The ancient Sumerians played board games. The games are usually made of clay. Usually, board games had pieces thrown at them or moving around the board. The Sumerians contributed to the invention of Game Checker.
