Wheelchair fencing

Wheelchair fencing
Wheelchair fencing is a modified sport in fencing for the disabled. It has now been adopted as the official event of the Summer Paralympics.

History
The sport was developed by sir Ludwig Gutman at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Wheelchair fencing was introduced to spectators around the world at the 1960 Paralympics in Rome. As with fencers, depending on the weapons used, you can compete in three codes: foil, epee, and sabre.

Fencing was originally a form of military training and began to develop into a sport in Germany and Italy in the 14th or 15th century. German fencing masters organized the first guild, and the most famous was Marx Brewer of Frankfurt in 1478.

How to play
During the race, the fencer holds a fencing weapon in one hand. The other hand is used to hold onto the wheelchair when recovering from the inconvenience. The foot must be placed on the footrest and the fencer must remain seated. In the preliminary individual competition, each competition lasts for 3 minutes.

Score
The goal of wheelchair fencing is for a player to score 15 points (or the most hits) against his opponent. Players are electronically connected to a signal box that records the touch of the weapon. Points are awarded whenever the fencer touches the opponent in the target area.

Trivia
China's Chen Yi-jun, the 2012 London Olympics double gold medalist, and France's Romain Noble, who has a bright future in the men's A event, are also on the list, while Hungarian wheelchair fencing star Shuzanna Kryak, who has competed in the Paralympics since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, is also on the list.
