한국 평균자책점 5.94, 산체스 'KIA → 대만 복귀' 비정상 투구 금지로 무너짐

대만의 유나이티드 데일리 뉴스(UDN)는 26일(한국 시간) 산체스가 퉁 라이온스와 계약을 앞두고 있다고 보도했습니다. 수타이안 퉁 단장은 "2주 동안 협상이 상당히 순조롭게 진행됐다. 며칠 안에 계약을 마무리할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했습니다.

수타이안은 "산체스가 한국에 갔을 때부터 퉁 감독은 대만으로 돌아가면 라이온스를 우선시하겠다는 의사를 밝혔습니다. 팀에 있는 동안 팀 동료들과 코치진과 잘 지냈습니다. 그게 팀 복귀에 도움이 될 것 같습니다."라고 덧붙였습니다.

베네수엘라의 우완 투수 산체스는 2012년 워싱턴 내셔널스와 국제 아마추어 계약을 체결하고 2022년까지 마이너리그 10시즌 동안 총 210경기(77경기 선발 등판, 674이닝 ⅓)에 출전해 44승 33패 9세이브 3.94탈삼진을 기록했습니다.

올해 메이저리그에서 활약하지 못한 채 아시아 무대로 향했습니다. 대만 퉁에서 열린 10경기(선발 9회, ⅔ 62이닝)에서 8승 1패 1.44탈삼진으로 리그를 지배했습니다. 7월 초 한국으로 이적하기 전에는 대만 리그에서 다승을 거두고 평균자책점 1위를 기록할 정도로 좋은 투구를 펼쳤습니다.

하반기 반격할 새로운 외국인 투수를 찾고 있던 KIA는 션 앤더슨과 아도니스 메디나를 모두 방출하고 토마스 파노니와 함께 산체스를 영입했습니다. 연봉 28만 달러 조건으로 KIA와 계약을 맺은 산체스는 KBO리그 데뷔전인 7월 9일 수원에서 열린 KT와의 경기에서 6⅓ 5피안타(1홈런) 10탈삼진 1실점으로 맹활약하며 맹활약을 펼쳤습니다.

하지만 산체스는 투구할 때 일관성 없는 더블킥에서 견제까지 특유의 스쿼트 동작으로 데뷔 때부터 논란의 대상이 되어 왔습니다. 상대 팀들이 이상한 폼에 대해 계속 항소하자 심사위원들은 산체스의 더블킥을 금지했습니다. 그는 또한 체크 동작의 일관성을 주문했지만, 심판에 따라 기준이 다르게 적용되어 산체스는 혼란스러워했습니다.

선수 생활 내내 이상한 투구를 해온 산체스는 국내에서는 더블킥과 견제 동작 모두에 제약을 받았습니다. 자신의 공을 100% 던질 수 없었고, 더 이상 데뷔전 때처럼 강렬한 투구를 보여주지 못했습니다. 8월 말 팔꿈치 부상으로 한 달간 결장한 것을 포함해 국내에서는 12경기(11선발 63이닝)에서 4승 4패 5.94탈삼진 59탈삼진에 그쳤습니다.

KIA의 가을야구도 주축 선수들의 부상 악재로 시즌 막판 6위로 부진했고, 산체스의 영입도 무산됐다. 각종 제약으로 인해 한국에서 특유의 변칙 투구를 펼치지는 못했지만 더블킥과 스쿼트 체크 동작이 모두 가능한 대만에서는 다시 살아날 것으로 예상됩니다.
