People began queuing ahead of the opening of the $743 million Sands Casino from 3:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, and more than 500 people gathered when the doors finally opened at 8:40 a.m., 20 minutes ahead of schedule.
The first people to walk through the door were elderly people, and they entered the casino. "Sands, come on, come on!" he cried. Some people were there to see the casino, and some people were there because they wanted to be a part of history. Most were fascinated by the thousands of slot machines that now have Bethlehem Steel. The first person to arrive at 3:30 a.m. was a retired ironworker. His goal was to be the first person to open the door. Because the parking structure had not yet opened, he parked a mile away and then walked back to the casino. Cars from New Jersey and Delaware mixed with locals, resulting in heavy traffic outside the casino. The new Sands is the largest casino in the state. It has two lounges, four restaurants, and 3,000 slot machines. Over the Memorial Day weekend, 40,000 people are expected to visit the casino. It will be a real-world test of 1,000 casino employees to prevent traffic backups. During the first trial run on May 18 and 20, the invited guests spent more than $3.2 million over 15 hours. The fundraiser raised $118,000 from 15 local charities. Sands Casino is the eighth casino built in Pennsylvania since slot machine gambling was approved by lawmakers in 2004. |
