This may be the most unusual piece of gambling news you'll hear this year. However, on Jan. 16, five members of Kansas' horse community actually asked Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to cut their pay. Supervisors usually receive nearly $24,000 a year. Mike Deans, a spokesman for the committee, said he thought it was appropriate for commissioners to demand pay cuts given the state budget crisis and the fact that there have already been planned employee layoffs.
The commission must be compensated by fees rather than tax revenues from regulated companies, but ambitious plans for seven state-owned gambling houses fell through in 2008. Currently, only one casino is under construction and the Dodge City facility is scheduled to open later this year. |
