Arteta's promise, "I'll win the Munich expedition"

Arsenal had a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarterfinal match held at the Emirates Stadium in London on Thursday. Arsenal and Bayern Munich will have their second match on Saturday.

Bayern Munich almost gave up the penalty kick right before the game ended. Arsenal Saka tripped over Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's knee and the referee stopped the game.

Rio Ferdinand, who played as Manchester United defender, told TNT Sport: "Noyer pulled his leg out (to Osaka). It should have been a penalty kick."

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keane also said, "It is very surprising that the referee did not give a penalty."

Of course, Saccado strongly protested to the referee after the game was over. Unexpectedly, however, the reaction was lukewarm.

BBC reported, "It was the right decision not to give a penalty kick. At first, I thought it was a penalty kick, but when I watched the replay, Saka made contact with Neuer. Neuer ran and stopped, but Saka kicked Neuer. The referee made a good decision."

Arsenal was expected to dominate until the match, but failed to display good performance in offense and defense as usual. Notably, Dier focused on attacking Munich's slow-paced defense, but failed to secure a goal. In many ways, the team ended up with a disappointing draw at home due to better-than-expected performance.

"UCL is different from league. The opposing teams here are definitely at a different level," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "And we didn't play as well as we usually do. We allowed them to continue to have space."

"We have to change. In an away match against Munich, space should not be allowed so easily to the opponent team. Only then can we produce different results. I have confidence that I will do well in the away match against Munich. I have to prepare well," he said.
