Saskatchewan's Northern Lights Casino

Saskatchewan's Northern Lights Casino In Big Expansion Under way

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) and Northern Lights Casino will significantly expand their facilities with projects that can improve both the gaming environment and the local economy. The ambitious project is expected to begin in late September 2024, and is expected to take around two years to complete and be completed in 2026.

The expansion will introduce an additional 31,000 square feet to the existing casino structure located at Prince Albert's Peter Ballantine Creation. The development will expand high-traffic spaces, such as the main game floor, to include new high-limit slot space and expanded smoking rooms. Further improvements include improved front entrances and upgrades to food and beverage facilities such as sports bars, restaurants, deli and floor bar spaces.

Jane Hansen, President and CEO of SIGA, emphasized the need for expansion: "The Northern Light Casino is one of our busiest, and it is clear that we need to expand our facilities to match the number of visitors. This expansion will enable us to better serve our customers and provide improved tourist destinations that will help our region as a whole economically."

Conscious beginnings and cultural integrity

The expansion plan was unveiled at a ceremony event attended by key stakeholders from the community, including SIGA, Northern Lights Casino, Peter Ballantine Creation, and Prince Albert Grand Council. The importance of incorporating culturally significant designs and maintaining the integrity of First Nations Hospitality was highlighted during the event.

Angela Isister, general manager of Northern Lights Casino, also noted the impact on the community: "This expansion is not just about expanding space, it's about supporting local businesses, cultural events, and organizations to enhance community engagement."

economic and social contribution

This expansion is based on SIGA's unique revenue allocation model, where all net sales are reinvested within Saskatchewan State. Specifically, 50% of these revenues will be donated to the First Nation Trust to distribute to 74 First Nations, 25% to Community Development Corporation for community initiatives, and the remaining 25% to the State General Revenue Fund.

This expansion project represents SIGA's significant effort to innovate and grow in response to the evolving needs of our customers and the wider community. The project follows a period of disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now it moves forward with new vitality and a clear vision for the future.

Continuous operations and future prospects

Despite the scale of its construction, Northern Lights Casino will remain open and continue to serve uninterrupted. The project not only enhances the gaming and entertainment experience, but also testifies to the spirit of collaboration between SIGA, the local Indigenous community, and the city of Prince Albert.

Through this expansion, Northern Lights Casino is expected to strengthen its position as Saskatchewan's top travel destination, attracting more tourists and significantly helping the local economy.
