As of the end of June, Macau had 46,900 hotel rooms, up 9.1% year-on-year, and about 21.2% from the same period in 2019, the pre-pandemic trading year, data from Macau's statistics office showed.

About 60%, or just over 28,000 rooms, were among the five-star categories. The data showed inventories in that category were up 9.2% year-over-year, and up nearly 16% in the second quarter of 2019.

Many of the five-star hotels operating in the Macau market are located within the casino resort complex.

In the first half of this year, the average occupancy of all types of rooms was 84.0%, and the occupancy of five-star rooms was 85.8%.

In the first half of 2023, the category's average night-time use was 77.7%. In the first half of 2019, the five-star facility share was 92.4%.

New casino resort hotel spaces since April 2023 include Palazzo Versace Macau, part of SJM Holdings' Kotai venue Grand Lisboa Palace.

In addition, in April last year, it opened Epic Tower, part of Studio City Phase II, for its existing customers: First of all, the resort's W Macau Hotel opened in September last year.

Galaxy Entertainment Group opened the All-Suite Raffles at Galaxy Macau Hotel located in Galaxy Macau, the group's flagship Kotai accommodation, in August 2023. Next month, it opened the Andaz Macau Hotel as part of the third phase of Galaxy Macau.

According to the National Statistical Office, two-star accommodation facilities grew the fastest year-on-year as of the end of June this year.

Macau had 2,000 two-star hotel rooms as of the end of June, up 27.1% from a year ago. Macau's three-star, two-star and low-cost inn divisions together represent about 20% of Macau's 46,900 total operating rooms at the end of the second quarter.

In the first half of this year, about 7.28 million guests were recorded staying in hotel rooms and inns. Of these, people from mainland China reached 5.31 million, up 21.9% year-on-year. The second-largest accommodation market was Hong Kong, which accounted for 962,300 guests, but down 12.6% year-on-year.

Excluding Greater China, South Korea was the most important supply market for Macau hotels in the first half of the year. A total of 148,900 people stayed at Macau hotels and inns, up 270.6% year-on-year.

Package travelers to Macau in the first six months of 2024 totaled 1.08 million, up 146.1% from a year earlier, according to the Census Bureau's latest data set. However, the tally of package travel visitors from January to June only recovered to around 22% in the same period in 2019.
