According to the new draft health guidelines, doctors are encouraged to question patients' game behavior to determine whether they need help in their medical situation.

Leading doctors say they should talk to problem gamblers early about treatment options, including conversational therapy and software that restricts internet games.

There are currently 12 NHS gambling treatment clinics in the UK, with three more now in planning stages. Patients can visit any of these clinics.

According to a recent study, about 300,000 problem gambling is affected in the UK, and 3.8 million people, including children, are affected by addiction.

The analysis showed that men gamble more than women, mainly online, where only 15% of men participate in gambling but only 4% of women.

NHS gambling clinics average 3,000 patients a year.

GamCare, a charity that runs the National Gambling Helpline, also said healthcare workers can play an "important role" in reducing harm by helping individuals receive support.

Fiona McLeod, head of services, said: "I believe that if these recommendations are implemented, they will provide a greater opportunity to prevent any harm to gambling in the UK."
