Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is going through unanswered questions in the Major League Baseball (MLB), launched a home run from the beginning today. His teammates also joined the team.
Ohtani played as the No. 1 designated hitter in the away game of the 2024 Major League regular season against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona on the 1st (Korea time). Ohtani, who appeared at bat in the top of the first inning, had a full count match against Marley Kelly, the starting pitcher of the Arizona Diamondbacks who are familiar to Korean baseball fans as well. He hit a breaking ball entering the middle of the eighth pitch, and hit a huge home run that flew over the fence in the middle. It was Ohtani's 44th homer this season. The homerun flew 420 feet (about 128 meters), 108.9 miles (about 175.2 kilometers) and 35 degrees Celsius, and as if Ohtani realized it was a homerun as soon as he hit the homer, he slowly headed to the first base. Starting with Ohtani's cannon, the Dodgers started a home run show. The next batter, Mookie Betts, also hit a two-pitch slider and hit a solo shot to the center-left stand. Without stopping, even Freddie Freeman hit an outstanding one-run homer, and the Dodgers made a back-to-back home run from the first inning. However, Dodgers starter Gavin Stone was also shaken when he gave up a home run at Inside Park to leadoff hitter Corbin Carroll in the bottom of the first inning. Then, Luerdes Gurriel Jr.'s two-run double and Eugenio Suarez's sacrifice fly made the Dodgers upset 3-4. The Dodgers had a chance to load the bases with no outs due to consecutive hits and Kelly's throwing error in the top of the second inning. Ohtani, who took the batter's box for the second time, hit a cutter near his body and was out on a fly to the center field. Meanwhile, third baseman Max Muncy homered, Ohtani added an RBI single, and the Dodgers also tied the game 4-4. Ohtani was grounded out to the first base in the top of the fourth inning, and he hit a fastball of 107.7 miles (173.3 kilometers) heading toward the second base in the top of the sixth inning, but was grounded out to the infield. He had a chance to hit the first base with no outs in the top of the eighth inning, but was out after a full count match. In the top of the ninth inning, Tommy Edman's two-run timely hit gave the Dodgers an 8-6 lead, and Ohtani was given another chance to bat, but he finished the game by hitting a fly to the left field. Ohtani was one hit, four RBIs and one run scored from four times at bat on the day. His batting average for this season remained at 0.294, and his OPS increased from 0.999 to 1.002. Earlier in the previous day's game, Ohtani continued his hitting sense by hitting a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, but he maintained his trend by hitting two consecutive home runs. In the game, which was the last day of August by local standards, Ohtani hit his 12th home run every month, achieving a successful finish. Ohtani has 44 homers and 43 steals as of Tuesday. At this pace, he can surpass both of his records by the end of the season. Ohtani is the first player in Major League history to record 43 or more homers and stolen bases in a season, and the 50-50 club in particular is an unprecedented milestone. Meanwhile, the Dodgers ended up winning the game 8-6. The two teams were tied 6-6 until the eighth inning amid a biting game. In the top of the ninth inning, however, the Dodgers had second and third base opportunities thanks to consecutive hits and sacrifice bunt by Will Smith and Gavin Lux. And with two outs, Edman's timely hit to win the game. |
