"Destructive Impact" on Tribal Rights and Cultural Resources

One of the supporters of Governor Newsom's initiative is the United Indians of Graton Lancheria, a federally recognized Indian tribe made up of coastal hok and southern pomo Indians.

The tribe thanked the governor for trying to protect "tribal sovereignty against the inexplicable haste of the Home Office to move these projects forward, ignoring the concerns of local tribes."

Sarris also spoke about their repeated attempts to explain to the Home Office that "the projects will have a devastating impact on the rights and cultural resources of our tribes and other tribes with ancestral territories."

The chairman said Haaland would ultimately be held accountable for these decisions and added: "We need to make sure that the interior is working to protect the interests of all tribes."

Along with Yocha Dehe Winton Nation, which runs Cash Creek Casino, Cressell Dehe Winton Nation, and several local government officials asked DOI during a news conference in West Sacramento to oppose the Scotts Valley casino project.

Two years ago, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors also unanimously voted against tribal casino resorts thrown by Koi Nation.

Other local tribes that accuse the two companies behind the casino project of "booking shopping" have also voiced opposition.

The term, considered aggressive by some Native Americans, suggests that the two tribes sought land far from the original reserve to max out future casino profits.
