The San Diego Padres are torn apart.
San Diego called up Matthew Batten when Kim Ha-sung was out with a shoulder injury. But in a day, he sent Batten back to Triple-A and instead called up Mason McCoy. Outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room for McCoy for 40. Tatis has already been on the IL for 60 days, so he can return soon when he is healthy. McCoy, 29, signed a minor league contract with the Padres in the offseason. He appeared in 108 games for Triple-A El Paso this year, batting .260/.329/.382, 21% below league average at wRC+ 79. He has never played a significant role as a batter since early 2021, posting .239/.318/.400 and wRC+80 in 458 Triple-A games. His major league career was with only one at-bat for the Toronto Blue Jays. Last year, he played in six games overall, but mostly as a defensive replacement. He gained a reputation as a great defender, and has frequently stolen double-digit bases, including 25 this year. The Padres placed shortstop Kim Ha-sung on the injured list, which led utility player Tyler Wade to play regular shortstop. In addition to some outfield activities, McCoy has played both first base left infield positions, so he can provide depth overall to the Padres. Depending on his ability, he can take on many duties later in the game, such as defense or base running. He still has a variety of options, and he only has a few days left in service, so the Padres can keep him in the big leagues for a while if they want to. Meanwhile, Tatis Jr. was placed on the injured list on June 23 due to a stress reaction in his right thigh. The 60-day move on June 22 will also be retroactive to the June 23 date, meaning he can return at any time. There have been reports that he may return in the middle of next month. |
